From Shina to Balti: Mapping Gilgit-Baltistan’s Languages
Gilgit-Baltistan is the northern most territory and provisional province of Pakistan.
In Gilgit-Baltistan five languages are spoken. Following is the list of languages spoken in Gilgit-Baltistan:
- Shina
- Balti
- Burushaski
- Khowar
- Wakhi

Among these languages Shina and the Balti language is the most spoken languages, almost by the 90% of the residents.
Shina is spoken by the residents of Gilgit, Chilas, Astore, Darel, Tangir districts of Gilgit-Baltistan. Also, Shina is spoken by minor section of residents of Roundu, Nagar and Ghizer districts.
Balti language is spoken in five districts of Baltistan division by almost 90% of the residents. Around 10% of the population of Baltistan Division in district Skardu, Roundu, and Kharmang speak Shina language.
Burushaski language is spoken in Hunza and Nagar Districts.
Khowar is spoken in the Ghizer district of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Wakhi language is spoken by a minority of Hunza District along the border of Wakhan Corridor of Afghanistan.
